I think most of the post-1800 references to "pounds" would have been to
the old Virginia currency, and not to "pounds sterling" (British
currency). In the first couple of decades after the Revolution, other
currencies were also pretty common (mainly Spanish, French, and Portuguese
gold coins). There was, finally, a lot of paper money of various
descriptions and the old stand-by, commodity money. The money situation
could get quite confusing, as people tried to make sense of (i.e., gauge
the real current value of) all the different coins, paper, and
commodities.
