The book you're referring to is _100 Years of Lynching_ by Ralph Ginzberg.
It is a straight-forward presentation of newspaper articles beginning c.
1882 that document various instances of extralegal violence.

For a VA (and GA) focus, W. Fitzhugh Brundage, _Lynching in the New South_
is a touchstone.

A broader treatment - Phillip Dray's _At the Hands of Persons Unknown_ would
be informative, as well as James Allen and Leon Litwack, _Without
Sanctuary_, a pictorial documentation of lynching violence. It used to be
available in an online version, but, regrettably, it's been taken down.

There was also a book titled, 100 lynchings, which may be available in
libraries. I recall seeing that book in the 1980's.
