The absolute BEST book is Elizabeth Varon, Southern Lady, Yankee Spy
(NY: Oxford University Press, 2003). Thoroughly researched and
exceeding well written.

Subject: [VA-HIST] Elizabeth Van Lew

Hello all: my mother in St. Louis asks for just one thing for Christmas
this year, and this a book on Elizabeth Van Lew, the famous Richmond
"Crazy Bet" Union spy in the Civil War. I see several books available
about her. I am asking this learned group's opinion on the BEST book
about her, and perhaps spying general in Richmond during the war.

She will more interested in historical fact over non-fiction,
romanticized accounts. Can you please help me choose the right book?
