B.S. for Blacksmith is the usual abbreviation.

I see on the Gilmer Nottoway map that the word "Store" is spelled out in at least a couple of places, as is "mill" and "foundry." (G. Mill is grist mill, S. Mill would be saw mill.)

Think S.H. is more likely to stand for "School House." I do see "Oak Grove Sch. Ho." spelled out more fully.

Subject: gilmer Map abbreviations

Hi,

I'm looking at the Nottoway 1864 Gilmer Map. It has some abbreviations that I am not quite certain as to what they mean:

S.H. = Store House?
B.S. = Black Smith?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lyle Browning
