Another Virginian died of injuries suffered in a Thanksgiving Day
football game in 1894. George Bahen, son of Richmond Alderman and
Jackson Ward ward boss James Bahen, was injuried while playing for
Georgetown in a game against the Columbia Athletic Club. He lingered in
the hospital, partially paralyzed from a spine injury, until he passed
away in March 1895. Georgetown suspended its football program for
several years following the tragedy. I recall seeing his monument in
Mount Calvary Cemetery while researching his father for the Dictionary
of Virginia Biography.

I believe the player in question was Christian Archer. He died following
a hit sustained in a game against Georgetown, Nov. 13, 1909. There is a
tablet in the UVA Chapel honoring Christian.

I am aware that Colonel John Singleton Mosby was outraged when a student
from the University of Virginia football team died from an injury
received during a football game and said so in a scathing op-ed. I'm
guessing that it was early in the 20th Century, as Mosby had worked for
the Southern Pacific RR until 1901. I do not know exactly when or the
newspaper, but would guess it was the Charlottesville paper. Do you
have any suggestions as to where I may look?
