Much of the time, to add insult to injury, southerners are portrayed by
non-southerners. This makes the required "suspension of disbelief" all
the more difficult, and can even ruin a whole show, whether on the
stage, the silver screen, the monitor or the cell phone (not that MY
cell phone can do anything special... just trying to keep up with the
times).

Oh well, these representations of real life will always fall short of
the real thing. Instead of characters with implausible accents, we are
surrounded by real people, who all have their own accents (mostly).
