Paul, there is an interesting book by Ronald Segal called "Islam's Black 
Slaves" where he shows that many if not most of the 14 million slaves taken 
from Africa in the Muslim slave trade over eight centuries of trading were 
actually Muslims. In the 1960s the East African port authorities were still 
checking Dhows for slaves from the coastal areas (where most people are 
Muslims), and in the 1980s the Saudis were kidnapping Muslims from West 
Africa who came for the Haj.
