K nowing that Mr. Mackall had friends all over this commonwealth, I
wanted to share this with the list. There was a death notice in today's
Washington Post and there should be a full obit tomorrow or Saturday. He
will be sorely missed. If you want to see a recent online interview with
Henry and his brother Douglass, go to the City of Fairfax web site
http://fairfax.granicus.com/ViewPublisher.php?view_id=2#SpecialProgrammi
ng and select under 2009 "Oral Histories". There are a couple of others
before you get to the Mackalls interview, but it is a classic.

Henry C. Mackall April 6, 1927-July 7, 2009

On Tuesday morning, July 7, 2009, the local history community suffered a
great loss with the passing of Henry Clinton Mackall.

Still a practicing attorney at the time of his death, during his life
Henry devoted countless thousands of hours of his non-law work time to
doing history and genealogy. He will be remembered by many of us as an
exacting mentor ("But it has to be right!") when it came to research and
writing. And as a friendly voice over the telephone who was always more
than willing to patiently and thoroughly explain the smallest of details
until he was sure that the caller understood the content and had
mastered the correct pronunciation, too.

Henry had served as treasurer of the Historical Society of Fairfax
County, Virginia, since the 1950s. He was a member of numerous other
historical societies in states as far flung as New York and Georgia, in
addition to many hereditary societies such as the Jamestowne Society,
the Order of First Families of Virginia, and the Aztec Club of 1847.
Because of Henry's lifelong interest in history, the Mackall family asks
that donations in his memory be made to the local historical society of
your choice.

The wake for this Virginia Gentleman will be held between the hours of 6
pm and 8 pm Friday evening at his historic log house, 1032 Towlston
Road, McLean, Virginia. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 am on
Saturday, July 11, 2009, at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 9220
Georgetown Pike, Great Falls, Virginia, followed by burial at
Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, 1724 Chain Bridge Road, McLean,
Virginia.
