Everyone,

Subscribers to VA-HIST may be interested in the following Summer Teachers' Institute. If interested please contact the Website below before July 22, 2005. Thanks.

A New Summer Teachers' Institute!

"Integrating Primary Sources into the History Classroom"

Co-sponsored by Virginia Commonwealth University and the Valentine Richmond History Center

August 8-12, 2005

Sessions will be daily at the Valentine Richmond History Center, in the heart of Richmond's historic Court End neighborhood.

Teachers of U.S. and Virginia History at any level will benefit from this hands-on exploration of large themes in American History through primary sources--documents, prints, broadsides, artifacts, photographs, etc., from the collections of the Valentine Richmond History Center--that inspire student engagement and active learning.

The week's themes include: John Marshall and the Early Nation; Slavery, Freedom, and the Underground Railroad; Industrializing America and the Valentine Meat Juice Company; the Lost Cause, Segregation, and the City; and Suburbanization and Post-1945 America.

Participants are eligible to earn either 3 non-credit Continuing Education Units or three graduate credits in VCU's School of Education AND three graduate credits in VCU's Department of History.

In addition to guest speakers and guided tours of historic sites in Richmond, the Summer Teachers' Institute will be directed by Dr. John Kneebone and Dr. Ryan Smith, of Virginia Commonwealth University's Department of History, and Ms. Pat Armbrust, Director of Education at the Valentine Richmond History Center.

For more information, please check the VCU Summer Workshop Series Website (http://www.vcu.edu/workshops).
