Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? The Recession in Historical Perspective

April 2, 2009

This Reynolds Business History Center seminar will feature speakers J.
Alfred Broaddus, former president of the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank,
and Paul A. Levengood, Virginia Historical Society president and CEO.
Participants will discuss the current recession in the context of
previous economic downturns in American history.  The seminar is from
5:30-7:30 p.m. and costs $15 for VHS members and $20 for non-members.

Dating Old Photographs: A Hands-On Workshop

April 9, 2009  

As the technology has changed, photography has evolved through many
formats, each of which can be identified and dated.  This class will
examine these changes using historic photographs from the Virginia
Historical Society collection.  In addition, participants are invited to
bring in an item or two from their personal collection.  Jeffrey
Ruggles, VHS curator of prints and photographs and author of Photography
in Virginia, will lead the workshop.  Class takes place from 5:30-7:30
p.m. and costs $15 for VHS members and $20 for non-members.  Advance

Trust But Verify: How to Get the Most Out of Your Library Research

Have you ever wondered when your house was built? Did you have an
ancestor who fought in the Revolutionary War or the Civil War?  Is all
the knowledge in the world available on Google? Come join Frances
Pollard, director of library services, and John McClure, reference
department manager, for a class on how to conduct basic research through
the Virginia Historical Society library collections.  Topics covered
will include an introduction to reference resources, information on how
to locate collections in the online catalog and website, and a
discussion of reliable sources that can be used to document local
history, a family, or a personal collection.  Class takes place from
5:30-7:30 p.m. and costs $15 for VHS members and $20 for non-members.
