The Historical Society of Fairfax County invites interested persons to
attend their spring meeting Sunday, March 23, at 2 p.m.
at Cabell's Mill in Ellanor C. Lawrence Park, 5235 Walney Rd.,
Centereville.
 
Our speaker is local historian and editor, Paula Elsey. She will give a
slide-illustrated lecture about Union Mills - the topic of the
forthcoming Fairfax County History Commission's book, Stone Ground: A
History of Union Mills.
 
Union Mills was a milling complex established by the Dye family ca.
1809. It was located near Bull Run and powered by water from Popes Head
Creek. It is now within the boundaries of Hemlock Overlook Regional
Park. Union Mills was a center of commerce and industry in the early
1800s, an occupied borderland during the Civl War, a focal point for
soapstone quarrying in the late 1800s, and the location of a home for
wayward girls in the early 1900s.
