Various topgraphic and other maps identify Curles Neck, Curles Neck Swamp,
Curles Neck Plantation, Curles Neck Mansion Wharf, and Curles Neck Road in
the same vicinity of Henrico County, on the north bank of the James, just
opposite the Chesterfield County line, and immediately to the west of Turkey
Island. Curles Neck Road runs south of State Route 5, New Market Road (John
Tyler Memorial Highway), 3 miles southeast of Interstate 295, at Exit 22.
This section of the James is the most twisty-bendy stretch downriver from
Richmond, and I "assume" that is how the name "Curles" was derived (if not,
I am sure someone will set us straight). Much of the area that comprises
Curles Neck (the geographical feature, and not the plantation) is within the
boundaries of the Presquile (from Preque Isle) National Wildlife Refuge
managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service of the Department of the
Interior. A limited amount of information can be learned about the area
from http://www.fws.gov/ and then search for "Presquile." A Google search
for +Curles +Neck returns 546 hits, including many about Randolph and
Woodson family genealogies and some of archaeological interest.

Real estate appraisers never get lost ... we just keep wandering around
until we figure out where the heck we are.
