I have now pulled out the notes that led me to ask this question --
in the 1600s GW's great-grandfather, Col. John Washington, married his
sister-in-law. After his first wife, Ann Pope, died in 1668 he married
(ca. 1669) a twice-married widow, Anne (Gerard) Brett; and when Anne
died, John married her sister in 1676, the already thrice-married
Frances (Gerard) Appleton.
