One aspect the the East African slave trade that I have always found  
fascinating was that it was often an adjunct to the trade in ivory and  
other commodities. Because the TseTse fly killed load bearing animals,  
people were used instead. And it was found that one could make an even  
higher profit by using slaves that could be sold at the coast rather  
than paying bearers.
