      One of the essays in J. G. Randall's CONSTITUTIONAL PROBLEMS UNDER LINCOLN addresses this very topic. My book on REPUBLICANS AND RECONSTRUCTION IN VIRGINIA deals with the story some, although in less detail than Randall's essay.
