Though under most of the radar, there are three Civil War Brass bands playing reproduction over-the-shoulder saxhorns in the Valley of Virginia. One of these is looking for a bandmaster to lead them during the next four years as Virginia commemorates the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Its not my band -- I don't even have one unless you count the recordings I palm off as "The Band of The Piltdown Fusiliers." But I pass along what I know about the opportunity.

Responsibilities:
1 - Build the existing 6-player band to a full 9 brass players, plus two percussion
2 - Conduct rehearsals, probably once every two weeks
3 - Lead performances, and indeed beat the bushes for opportunities
4 - Misc. Get uniforms, contributions, etc.

The music library is in pretty good shape and includes the only Virginia Confederate Band music to survive (19th VA Hvy Arty), The Brass Band Journal 1854, Patriotic Songs and Airs of the Confederate States of America, special arrangements written for the band.

Compensation. Probably none..... just glory. Maybe mileage to get to and from rehearsals. Seriously, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for some musician out there who wants to get service stripes for leading a real 19th century American Brass Band, during the best four years and which will not come along again for another half century.

Please pass this along to your musician friends. Contact me at [log in to unmask] if you want more info.

Randy Cabell
