My housekeeper is a sweet lady who has an unfortunate "funk" about her, but  
I am too polite to suggest anything on that point, and she does too good a job 
 around here for me to complain about.
 
Perhaps Jefferson was in a similar mind set.

and whose clothing was dirty.
