I supposed that is the old "Cavalier Commonwealth" issue rearing its
head yet again, referring to the pro-Charles I crowd of elites who came
to Virginia in the Berkeley era in the 1640s-60s.  The most convenient
modern source for accessing that perspective is David Hackett Fischer's
ALBION'S SEED chapter on Virginia.
