Anne,
I just read about her death, and she was only sixty-eight years old. She stated that all she wanted was to marry the person she loved. It reminded me of the mother of Mary Bowden, who was taken before a Grand Jury, in Westmoreland County, after Mary's birth. She was born February 20, 1730 (according to court records). The mother had attempted to marry Mary's father, but the court did not recognize it, because she (her name was Mary as well), was a mulatto trying to marry a white man. Wisely, the courts stated that, the child Mary could not be considered a bastard, because her mother was prevented by law from marrying the father (this is not an exact quote). In other words it was a catch-22 situation. However, many of the courts of that day did not see it that way. I believe Mary's mother, who was a part of the prominent Monroe family, received special consideration.

These out dated laws lasted well into the twentieth century, until the Lovings went to court and fought it. My hat is off to both of them.
