Somewhere in the cobwebs of my brain, I recall hearing that between helping Mr. Jefferson with THE University, and frittering away his time (at least according to some sources:)) on the James River Kanawha Canal, Cabell went to China or Japan. But I cannot find anything to substantiate that memory. Is there a bio of the gentleman, or perhaps a publication coming from his purported trip?
