John Barden, who is Head of Reference and Research Services at the
University of Richmond Law School, wrote his dissertation, "'Flushed
with Notions of Freedom': The Growth and Emancipation of a Virginia
Slave Community, 1732-1812" (Duke, 1993) on Robert Carter and the
emancipation of his slaves. He goes into great detail on the
consequences of Carter's actions on those emancipated. The
dissertation is very readable, and I highly recommend it.
