There were sit-ins and demonstrations in Lynchburg, Richmond, Petersburg,
Farmville, and some other cities but none had the violence seen in Danville. I
have a bit about Danville in a Biographical sketch on Judge A.M. Aiken that I
wrote for the first volume of the Dictionary of Virginia Biography. Dr. King was
urged by many of his staff to turn his attention to Danville--he spoke there in
July 1963--but events intervened (Kennedy shooting, Birmingham, etc.). See David
Garrow's bio for the details.
