This obituary notice, with announcement of a memorial service, appeared in
the Richmond Times-Dispatch, 23 December 2018:

SCHWARZ, Dr. Philip James, 78, a man of dry wit, died early morning on
Saturday, December 15, 2018. He was a professor at Virginia Commonwealth
University, where he worked most of his adult life. Born November 12, 1940,
in New York, N.Y., son of Hamilton D. (an investment banker) and Constance
(Harrigan) Schwarz (a pianist), he married Janet Bowers (a librarian),
August 12, 1970. He was educated at Brown University, A.B., 1962,
University of Connecticut, M.A., 1965, Rutgers University, M.L.S., 1965 and
Cornell University, Ph.D., 1973. He was the winner of several teaching
awards from Virginia Commonwealth University and the author of six books.
He also served on the Richmond Slave Trail Commission. Dr. Schwarz is
survived by his beloved wife, Janet; his children, Daniel and Louise;
grandchildren, Rebecca and Gabrielle; and his siblings, Tracy and Natalie.
He was predeceased by his sister, Ann. Services for Dr. Schwarz are
scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2019, at St. Paul's Episcopal
Church in Richmond, Va. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Westminster
Canterbury Foundation or the VCU History Department.
