Subject: Cemetery Descendants' Story Captures National Attention





 

Last Friday hundreds of descendants attended the dedication of the Contrabands and Freedmen's Cemetery Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia.  Several city agencies had been involved in "discovering" the cemetery and bringing it to public awareness.  The weekend's activities drew national interest and attracted a lot of media coverage.  



Some of you may know Char McCargo Bah (professional genealogist/author/independent historian) who was intimately involved in the project.  She identified descendant families and was a key organizer for this event.

Last night’s national broadcast of CBS Evening News featured a moving piece on the Contraband and Freedmen Cemetery Memorial. The night it aired, it was one of the top 5 viewed stories on the CBS News web site and it is currently still featured on their home page. The Alexandria Convention & Visitors Association created a dedicated PR effort around the cemetery’s extraordinary story, working closely with City staff. Media attendance at the dedication included CBS (national), CBS 9, ABC 7, NBC 4, WTOP and the Washington Post, and the story was picked up by the Associated Press.
