In 1704, Jane Webb was determined to marry the man she loved--a slave named Left. Jane was so determined that she agreed to seven years of servitude with Left's owner in exchange for the marriage and Left's freedom at the end of the agreement. At the end of the seven years, Left's owner failed to uphold his agreement, and Jane Webb turned to the Northampton courts to win freedom for her husband and children. See today's Out of the Box for the rest of Jane Webb's story.
