Firstly, thank you to all who had suggestions for sources of information
about colonial ships.  I've got a couple of leads to track down, and if I
turn up anything interesting/useful I'll pass it along.

I also had an unrelated question: If I needed a single general reference
(still in print) to help me understand legal practices around land deeds,
wills, and other arrangements in the 17th - 19th centuries in Virginia,
would there be any that you would recommend?
