From 1860-1899 Sarah Morgan McKown of Gerrardstown, WV kept a diary.

Over the last several years James V. Hutton has extracted for us, from
Sarah's many entries, a glimpse of this remarkable period in history. His
book, "The Diary of Sarah Morgan McKown, 1860-1899", has just been
published-some 400 pages, all fully indexed.
Entries of particular interest are:
Marriages, births and deaths of many family lines.
Troop movements and actions during the Civil War
        Church activities
        Interactions between blacks and whites
        Chores of daily living
Changes in the culture, especially post-Civil War

The book sells for $35.00 plus tax (if applicable) and shipping and is
available through the Berkeley County Historical Society, 126 E. Race
Street, PO Box 1624, Martinsburg, WV 25402. Tel. 1-304-267-4713. (All
proceeds go to the Society.)
