In researching the couple John Frazier Alvey (1808-1837 committed suicide) and wife Sarah Wills (1808-1861), both buried in Shockoe Hill cemetery here in Richmond, I see on the plot map a stranger in their lot.

Their name is F.W.R. (Frederick William Rives) Danforth (1823-1865) who married 1850 to Emily Marie Temple (who I don’t see buried there but was still living as of 1909 in Petersburg).

He is the son of Joseph Danforth (1783-1844) and Frances Heath

F.W.R. was a Corporal in the 5th Battalion Virginia Infantry and died in battle in Petersburg.

Following the death of her husband in action near Petersburg she and another woman were detained and held by Federal Forces while attempting to cross the lines.

She (Mrs. Danforth) petitioned Grant for their release and return to her small children who were still behind Confederate lines. They were freed after three days and an oath not to conspire against or share information learned about her captors with the enemy.

The puzzle here is that I don’t find any family link of this Danforth and Alvey or Wills that I know of yet he is buried there in Richmond (in a strangers lot?) and his wife isn’t?

Any idea what is happening here? Thanks

Eric
