I don't recall whether Robert McColley's pioneering work has been
mentioned yet in this thread on emancipations in Virginia. His book
Slavery and Jeffersonian Virginia was first published in 1964 and reissued
in a second (pb) edition in 1973. His chapter 7 is devoted to those he
calls "The True Emancipators."
