Hoping someone can shed some light on this person and why what happened did?

Robert Valentine Whitehurst (1881-1928) who was married to Julia Bidgood (1881-1964) who are buried at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond VA... I show that they moved to Baltimore and he died in Washington, DC in a hotel room.  The Washinghton Post listed him as Walter W. Whitehurst and only 9 months earlier there was a Georgianna (Franklin) Whitehurst that died listed as wife of Walter W. Whitehurst.

Tirns out there is a real Walter W. Whitehurst who died in 1932 and buried with Georgianna in Norfolk, VA but the person listed as Walter in the 1928 newspaper was actually Robert.  The DC death index also does not show Walter then but does show Robert so...

How could such a mistake be made?  Is this common?

Also, does anyone have a birth date for Robert in 1881?   Thanks!
