Down here in the southeastern corner of the state, the history of the growth and development of the cities creates some overap in the location of some of those records.  The city of Norfolk, for example, includes area that were once part of Norfolk County and of Princess Anne County; indeed the creation of the cities of Chesapeake and Virginia Beach were accomplished in part to prevent further Norfolk encroachment on county lands.   Anyhow, the upshot of that for locating records is that depending on where a person or his/her property was on or before some given date those records will be in the now-city records of either Chesapeake or Virginia Beach.   Robert Hitchingsm the special collections librarian in the Norfolk Public Library, is fond of saying: "the road to Norfolk's history runs through Chesapeake."
