Maybe it's useful to report that not only does the Web page for Monticello's
"Report of the Research Committee on Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings"
tell where to find online the materials that originally appeared in Nature
("Appendix A"), as I think was already noted recently, but that page also
links to brief statements of the judgments of four scientists whom
Monticello consulted ("Appendix B"). As far as I know, the only data made
public from the DNA testing of a decade ago are those in the brief original
Nature report. For what it may be worth, I've never heard any criticism or
even speculation against the validity or completeness of those data. (BLUNT
ADDENDUM FOR MR. BARGER: This gentleman wants to think about these matters,
and I only wrote this note because I thought I might be able to help him a
little bit. You know that I admire your patriotism, civic sense, love of
history, and devotion to your cause, and that I'm grateful for your
contributions in getting the DNA study conducted in the first place. But
this message is not a cue or a justification for you to repeat yet again
your beliefs about the controversy and about what you say you see as others'
dishonor. When you do that, you make it harder for the rest of us to
continue the Hemings-TJ discussion in ways that are still constructive and
still productive. When those who are rightly tired of your repetitions boo
you, they boo us too.)
