May 1 will be the 50th anniversary of the downing of the CIA spy plane over Russia. The pilot, Francis Gary Powers, was a Virginian. The deputy director of the CIA who was present in 1954 at the White House meeting when Eisenhower authorized the U2 and still held that post in 1960, was also a resident of Virginia. So this historic event has ties to the Old Dominion.

I just attended a bang-up exhibit and talk by Francis Gary Powers, Jr. (son of the U-2 pilot) at the Virginia Historical Society.

Does anybody know if there is a 50th anniversary conclave anywhere? There was for the 40th.

Randy Cabell
