The story of Company A from Bedford is indeed dramatic if heart rending. The town did not know when they heard the news of the Normandy Invasion that six weeks later the telegrams would come. A little recognized fact today is that the road known simply as Route 29 is the 29th Infantry Division Memorial Highway, a tribute to the heroism of Co A and the other National Guard units of the 29th that landed in the first waves on Omaha Beach.
Several years ago, Bill Geroux did a marvelous feature on The Bedford Boys in the Richmond Times Dispatch. Two of the articles are on the web at the cites below. Unfortunately, I could not access the third article Some Came Home. It appears to have been removed.
