Everyone,

On the principle that, as a late mother-in-law put it, "she who tooteth not her own, the same shall not be tooted," I shamelessly send this announcement to the list.

John Kneebone will present the 2017 Elske v. P. Smith Distinguished Lecturer Award Address, “America’s First Catholic President: The Presidential Election of 1908 (and the Backlash That Followed),” on Wednesday, 22 March 2017, at 1:30 p.m., at the VCU Student Commons (Richmond Salons III-IV).

Fake news and rumors caused many Americans after the presidential election of 1908 to fear that William Howard Taft was the agent of a foreign religious power, the Roman Catholic Church, which was intent on controlling the United States. The issues of 1908 and after—religious liberty, political proscription, assimilation, and pluralism—echo still today.

The lecture is free and open to the public. The VCU Student Commons is located at 907 Floyd Avenue. See http://www.maps.vcu.edu/monroepark/

For VA-HIST folks keeping score, I promise mention of Union Theological Seminary and the Leader Theater in old Manchester, plus I'll do my best to be interesting.

John
