No, by Southerners I meant those who were American citizens in the South who were obviously white.
For a reference on the working habits of many Black slaves in the South Cf. Biography of a Slave; Being Experiences of Rev. Charles Thompson, a Preacher of the United Brethren Church, While a Slave in the South. He also gives a good account of the "lazy and shiftless" work habits of many of those he describes as "white trash." He was a contemporary commenter, and there are many others. No one participating in the forum was such.

As the many informed responses to this thread have already made clear, just about everything in the post below is pure fantasy. "Southerners"--I assume the commenter really means "white Southerners"--were clearly doing quite the opposite of what the poster "thinks" they should have been doing. As others have stated with evidence, most white Southerners were quite happy with slavery, sought its expansion, and were vigorously defending it politically and legally.

> I would think based on accounts of how expensive slaves were to purchase and provide for, and accounts of how lazy and shiftless many were, Southerners would be pleased to substitute technology for the problems and expense involved in keeping slaves in their work force. With a ready market like Brazil for the sale of their slaves, they would have an out to recoup what they had into their slaves. While there may not have been a widespread movement for emancipation in the South, there was a widespread discussion on what to do with the burgeoning slave population which was becoming more and more problematic, to the extent that the northern Southern states were moving away from slavery and selling them to the deep Southern states.
