The Friends of the Virginia State Archives
Library of Virginia
800 East Broad Street
Richmond Virginia

Friday, October 27, 2000 at 5 o'clock.

The brief annual meeting will include the election of officers
and honorary awards for service,
and will be followed at 5:30 by:

The First Annual Richard Slatten Lecture
by Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck
"In and Out of His Majesty's Service -
     Virginians as Colonial Soldiers and Revolutionaries"

The lecture is open to the public, and will be followed by light
refreshments.

     On Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, the Friends of the Virginia State
Archives will host our FVSA Fall Seminar, at the Library of Virginia
(800 East Broad Street, Richmond), from 9:00 AM  (Registration
opens 9:00, Program begins 9:30) until about 3:15.  At the seminar,
Mr. Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck will speak on:

"Finding Substitutes for Birth and Death Records,"
"Identifying the Maiden Names of Females,"
"Finding Your Immigrant Ancestor"
and "Bridging the Atlantic."

     Cost for the fall seminar is $20 for members and $25 for
nonmembers and includes a box lunch.  Regular membership
in the Friends is $15/yr.  To register (and/or to join), send your
check, with a note with your name, mailing address, phone number
and e-mail address (and any special dietary needs) to: Fall Seminar,
Friends of the Virginia State Archives, PO Box 4804, Richmond
VA 23220.  Registrations will also be accepted at the door, but
lunch cannot be guaranteed for day-of-event registrants.

About The Friends of the Virginia State Archives

You are cordially invited to share in the realization of the goals of
the Friends of the Virginia State Archives.  Founded and incorporated
in 1989, the Friends is a non-profit organization dedicated to
supporting the Virginia State Archives through:

· Soliciting and administering gifts, grants and bequests for the
benefit of the State Archives;

· Developing and making available to the public workshops, seminars
and other programs related to the functions for which the State Archives

is responsible; and

· Providing financial support to the State Archives not otherwise
available from appropriations or government funding.

As a member of the Friends, you will receive the organization's
semi-annual newsletter.  The annual meetings, open to all members,
feature programs by experts in historical and genealogical research
who have used the valuable resources of the Archives.  Special workshops

and seminars are a regular part of the Friends' activities, and members
qualify for a reduction in the registration fee for such meetings.
Membership in the Friends entitles you to purchase publications of
the Library of Virginia at a discount of 10%.
