Everyone,

The folks at the Valentine Richmond History Center are fully capable of publicizing their own exhibitions, but this one is worth comment.

Shanna Merola, an undergraduate photography student at Virginia Commonwealth University, has created an exhibition of photographs, using a pinhole camera, of the sites in Richmond associated with the slave trade, all of them long since occupied by new buildings and lots of asphalt parking lots. I had the chance to look at a number of her photos last year. Her approach is founded on the contrast between what happened at those sites and their present appearance, and the method--pinhole camera--gives the images a moody, spiritual impact. The title of the exhibition, "Tell Me Where You're Marching, Tell Me Where You're Bound," captures the effect.

The exhibition runs from 31 January to 31 August 2008. Objects associated with the slave trade from the Valentine Richmond History Center's collections will be part of the exhibition, too.

You have plenty of time to see the exhibition, but those VA-HIST subscribers who have attended the First Fridays Art Walk, on (and off) Broad Street east of Belvidere, will be interested to know that on Friday, 1 February 2008, the Valentine Richmond History Center will host an opening reception for the exhibition, with free shuttle service from Quirk Gallery.
