John

The letter is definitely from John Taylor of Caroline. It is his hand and signature, matching, for example, a letter from Taylor to Thomas Jefferson of 10 July 1816 (also at MHS). Both letters are addressed from Port Royal, with the 1816 letter saying it was written from "Caroline Port Royal." Port Royal is a village about 3 miles from Taylor's home plantation of Hazelwood. Taylor would have listed Port Royal as his address because it had the closest post office.

Best regards, Jeff
