Everyone,

Don’t miss the 5th annual VCU Southern Film Festival. All events are free, and this year’s theme is “Sports and the South.”

On Friday, 7 Feb., at 3 p.m., at the Monroe Park Campus, Academic Learning Center, the film Remember the Titans, with a special guest appearance by Coach Herman Boone.

That evening, at 6:30 p.m., at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Theater, the film Secretariat will be shown, with special guest Kate Chenery Tweedy.

On Saturday, 8 Feb., at 10 a.m., at the VCU Grace Street Theater, “Tennis Shorts,” with Rex Miller, about his films on African American tennis pioneers, Althea Gibson and Richmond’s Arthur Ashe.

At 1 p.m., at the Virginia Historical Society, the film Mickey, from John Grisham’s story about Little League baseball, with special guests, Richard and Kathy Verlander, parents of star pitcher Justin Verlander. This event is intended for the whole family.

At 4 p.m., at the VCU Grace Street Theater, the film Greased Lightning, with Richard Pryor portraying Danville’s pioneer NASCAR driver, Wendell Scott. Members of Scott’s family will be present, too.

Finally, at 7 p.m., also at the Grace Street Theater, the film Whip It!, a film about roller derby, co-sponsored by the River City Roller Girls. Screenwriter Shauna Cross will join critic Morgan Dean and skaters to discuss the film afterward.

All the events are free and open to the public. For more information, go to http://wp.vcu.edu/sff

See you there,

John
