On the off chance that someone made a mistake when they registered a
house in Church Hill section of Richmond in 1817... did the word (then
alpha) street designations change between 1820-1840? Looking up the
Izard Bacon Whitlocke house that stood where Pritchard Brothers is now
(torn down in 1930), it states it sat on Grace and the property ran
between Broad and Grace (then streets G and H). But, as time went on
and a couple policy renewals later, the streets changed to I and K
(Marshall and Clay) which is actually correct and by the 1851 policy
even has the word Marshall Street replaced I Street. Think the lettered
streets changed c.1846 to names but don't think there was a name shift
by one block was there? Is this simply an error by the Mutual Assurance
company even though diagrams changed three times before the street name
switch? Something like a person mistook K Street as an H Street? Does
this happen often?
