Early one September morning in 1859, slave Hannah was found gasping for
breath and dying before a fire. The coroner and his jury of 12 men with
no medical experience are asked to determine cause of death. All they
have are their eyes and ears. They examine the body and the place where
she died, they listen to the testimony of witnesses, but what they hear
are two different versions of events. Hannah's owner claims she fell but
neighbors report the sounds of begging and whipping. Now it's up to the
coroner to determine what caused Hannah's death. Was it suicide, an
accidental fall, or was it from the whippings she received? Find out the
coroner's decision in today's blog post.
