Jean Skipwith (born Jane Miller, 1748-1826) at the age of 40 in 1788
married her deceased sister Anne's widower Peyton Skipwith.
Jean inherited Elm Hill Plantation from her father's estate (her
mother was a Bolling).
Eventually Lady Jean Skipwith and her husband (he was a baronet) had
four children of their own, and moved to his estate Prestwould in
Mecklenburg County.
Prestwoud is still there and open for tours.
Besides marrying her former brother in law at age 40, and having four
children at a rather mature age, she was remarkable for having had an
extensive private library of her own - something most women and many
men could not boast.
The Prestwould Executive Director is scheduled to give a lecture at
the Virginia Historical Society I think October 1.
