The College of William & Mary, Earl Gregg Swem Library, seeks an
innovative, energetic individual to lead the Special Collections
Research Center. The Center occupies approximately 25,000 sq. ft. in the
Warren E. Burger wing of a new addition to the remodeled library
(completed in February 2005).

The Center houses extensive manuscript collections documenting Virginia
and American history, a considerable rare book collection, university
archives and the personal papers of Chief Justice Warren E. Burger.

The College: William & Mary, chartered in 1693, consistently ranks as
one of the top public universities in the country. The student
population is approximately 5500 undergraduate and 2000 graduate
students. The College emphasizes undergraduate research and the Director
will be expected to play a strong role in promoting the SCRC and
encouraging its use for undergraduate research. More information about

Responsibilities: The Director of the Special Collections Research
Center reports to the Dean of University Libraries and is responsible
for administering the Center and providing leadership and vision for the
Center staff, for planning and policy development, collection
development and preservation, and public services. He/She will also
serve as liaison to selected academic departments, providing services to
students and faculty. Works with Swem Director of Development on donor
opportunities for the SCRC and is involved in maintaining donor
relationships. Develops grant proposals. As a member of the Library's
senior management team, the Director will be involved in library-wide
management groups.

Required Qualifications: An advanced degree in American history,
American studies, or other relevant discipline as well as a master's
degree in library science or the equivalent; a proven record of
leadership and the ability to facilitate change; well-developed
organizational, management, and decision-making skills, as evidenced by
three to five years of successful managerial experience of special
collections in an academic or special library, and a strong service
orientation.

Required Experience: Experience in building special collections through
gifts and purchases; excellent teaching and public presentation skills;
the ability to work in a collaborative environment; knowledge of private
collecting and the antiquarian book trade; knowledge of conservation
principles and techniques; knowledge of and experience with current and
emerging technologies to enable and improve intellectual access to
collections; understanding of current archival standards and best
practices for processing and description of collections and automation
of finding aids; familiarity with pertinent legal and ethical issues.

Preferred: Experience in fundraising and success in attracting grants,
foundations and private support for library projects. Record of
successful digital projects, innovation, creativity, and flexibility.
