The Dictionary of Virginia Biography (1:139-141) includes a biography of
James Anderson. The bibliographical note may prove of some assistance in
directing you to primary sources, including claims for compensation
filed by his son Robert Anderson (1839, Rejected Claims, RG 3, Library
of Virginia, and Legislative Petitions, James City Co., 11 Dec. 1849, RG
78, Library of Virginia). There are also some relevant materials in the
Brock Collection at the Huntington Library.

Best of luck with your research.
