I stand corrects on Scots-Irish.

There were far greater problems between protestants and catholics than just 
marriage. You may recall it was an issue in Kennedy's election when some 
questioned whether he would be his own man, or take "orders" from the pope.

I'm not sure what you are referring to with the "dirty work", unless it is 
your way of expressing class. My reference was more to the point that those 
in the "upper classes" tended to preserve their "pure blood" more than 
people who work together.
