I think you are mistaken. As far as I know "royalty" never passes to an 
adopted child, therefore, the royalty would have passed to any sons of 
Washington's brothers/sisters. And, then of course, there is the question of 
whether Mary, if she had been deemed of "royalty" would have been allowed to 
marry a "commoner" such as the soldier, Robert E. Lee. As in the case of the 
current Queen of England, if a woman inherits the throne, her husband is not 
necessarily made King.
