Herb,
Thanks for the recommended reading list. I suspect that the Jefferson
apologists have little or nothing new to add to the discussion that you,
yourself, have not stated.
The fact remains that Jefferson stands indicted on the very old element of
guilt by circumstantial evidence, a matter of legal assignment of guilt that
have sent many a man to prison or to his death. Motive, his sexual needs at
the time, and Opportunity, being on site when the woman became pregnant, are
obvious. That Jefferson benefitted from the relationship is also evidenced
by the increase in his net worth by the birth of more slaves.
More damning evidence comes from the variety of remarks of those who made
statements of Jefferson's relationship with Sally. One could be dismissed,
but there is rather a large body of evidence that cannot all be attributed
to "liars". I will remind that the matter of Betsey Walker came to light
because Jefferson lied to his daughters, and that he was in colusion with
James Callender in dissing the Federalists, employing "lies" to best his
enemies. Jefferson does not come off as having totally "clean hands", so
using the excuse that others "lied" is not much of a defense.
And, I will repeat again, that if these allegations are all "lies" and that
it was other Jeffersons who committed the acts, that Jefferson was then a
PIMP for his favored maid.
