Not hardly.  Then or now!

VPI . . . now VaTech . . . was founded as a land grant college . . .  
to serve precisely that constituency.

But it's now an extraordinary, cutting edge, 21st century engineering  
school . . . with a liberal arts curriculum that . . . despite our  
intense rivalry . . . I must admit . . .  ain't too shabby either.

I hear they'll soon have a full-blown medical school there as well.
