* "The More Things Change...": A History of Presidential Transitions *

After two months of lame duck leadership, America is ready to swear in
its new president. But how far will the winds of change blow us?
Historically, even the best-laid presidential plans have been held up by
economic, military, and legislative constraints. JFK, for example,
promised a New Frontier, but his foreign policy was rooted in 1950s Cold
War strategies. So what difference do presidential transitions really
make? Why do we mark time by presidencies when key historical events
often have little to do with them? Which transitions have brought real
change?

"BackStory With the American History Guys"--a new call-in public radio
show hosted by Virginia historians Ed Ayers, Peter Onuf, and Brian
Balogh--wants to hear from you. Send us your ideas, questions, and
stories about the meaning of presidential transitions, and you can join
the hosts on the air. Email Catherine Moore at [log in to unmask] or
visit www.backstoryradio.org and leave us a message...
